Catemaco, a grubby lakeside town near the Gulf of Mexico, is Mexico's unofficial capital for sorcerers, shamans and other consultants of the occult. In Catemaco, Veracruz, every first Friday on the third month of the year the sorcerers claim the their powers enlarge and they clean their souls from all he wrongs, and bad influences that they fight against during the whole year. Catemaco is by no means the only Mexican town with a tradition of witchcraft, but the local occultists attribute their fame to stronger powers.

Upon hearing their clients' complaints, the warlocks usually perform a spiritual "cleansing." Typically this is done with an egg, but some sorcerers prefer a live toad, which they can then slice open to display the heinous matter they have purged from a client's soul. Both God and Satan
The sorcerers turn to God for help with some maladies, to Satan for others. Each seems to have his own sense of which force corresponds to what problem, but a grandmother with cancer would usually be entrusted to "white" forces, while dispensing with a bad lover might go to the Devil.

MEETING AT MIDNIGHT

The first Friday in March (which is actually the first Thursday night) celebrates the annual Congreso Internacional de Brujos when healers, soothsayers, assorted medicine men and a garden-variety of witch doctors descend on the town to sell their spells.

THE RITUAL OF THE BLACK SACRED MEETING
